Spice & Herb Storage

The real secret to fine food?
the love you put in each dish… and using the best.

A well-stocked spice cabinet is central to daily cooking and baking and keeping these culinary jewels fresh is the key to excellent results.

Follow these simple tips to keep your ingredients at their best.

Using fresh herbs and spices is always the first choice but, a well stocked spice cabinet will invite you to be creative every day.

About storage:
Your herbs and spices impart their flavor by way of natural oils that cause them to be very aromatic and for this reason they should be stored well away from other foodstuffs. Keeping these properties intact is critical to your culinary success.

  • Store whole spices in small glass or plastic airtight containers.
  • Heat, humidity and excessive light will result in the dry herbs and spices losing their flavor more quickly. Always store spices in a cool, dark place.
  • Whole spices may last up to 3 to 5 years when cared for properly. When possible grind your spices as they are needed.
  • For best results grind whole spices in a grinder or mortar & pestle as needed.
  • To enhance the whole spice flavor, try roasting the whole spice in a dry skillet over a medium heat, being careful not to burn them.
  • To keep larger quantities of herbs and spices fresh, store them in tightly sealed containers in the freezer.
  • Do not store dry herbs and spices near any humid source, such as sinks, dishwashers, kettles, coffee makers, on countertops, near stoves and microwaves.
  • Avoid storing dried herbs and ground spices inside the refrigerator due to the high humid environment.
  • Store your dried and ground herbs and spices in air-tight containers, away from light, in a cool, dry place. Spices stored this way readily keep well for 6 months to a year, so for best results, buy them in small quantities.
