Yohimbe

Yohimbe, Yohimbe bark, yohimbine, yohimbine hydrochloride

Pausinystalia yohimbe , Corynanthe yohimbe

The Yohimbe tree (an evergreen) is native to South Africa and found primarily in Cameroon, Gabon, Nigeria, the Congo, and Zaire. The active ingredient, Yohimbine (yohimbine hydrochloride), is found in higher concentrations in the pausinystalia yohimbe and to a lesser extent in the Corynanthe yohimbe. Yohimbine has been isolated in both, and made available by prescription for impotence.

Yohimbe is widely available as an extract from the bark, capsules, and pressed into pills. It is used in dieting and the bark of this tree is used to make herbal tea. Yohimbine is believed to increase blood flow, raise blood pressure, and increase the heart rate.

Possible side effects associated with its use include high blood pressure, increased heart rate, headache, anxiety, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, tremors, and sleeplessness. Yohimbe can be dangerous if taken in large doses or for long periods of time.
Yohimbe should not be taken by people with heart problems, high blood pressure, anxiety, kidney disease, those who are pregnant, or taking antidepressants.

Yohimbe the herb, while containing yohimbine, also contains other compounds and can have additional effects.

Traditionally yohimbe bark has been used in Africa to treat fevers, coughs, and leprosy. Often yohimbe tea was taken by warriors in preparation for battle. Yohimbe was also taken during fertility celebrations, mating and marriage rituals. It has been used as a topical anesthetic slightly milder than cocaine, and a hallucinogen when smoked. Yohimbe's most common, modern use is as a sexual enhancer.

Yohimbe bark is harvested during the rainy season, May to September, when its alkaloid content is highest. Since stripping the yohimbe tree of its bark eventually kills the tree, new yohimbe trees are planted regularly. New trees grow relatively fast and can even sprout from the stump of a dead yohimbe tree.

Some controversy surrounds Yohimbe and its use. Conflicting reports by competing studies have fueled much of the conflict. Yohimbe blocks monoamine oxidase (MAO), dopamine and serotonin. Blocking MAO can help with depression. Blocking dopamine and serotonin can make depression worse. Some studies report that Yohimbe can be helpful when taken in conjunction with some antidepressant drugs, both by increasing the efficacy of the drugs and by reducing impotence often caused by medications and yet other studies have concluded that yohimbe can be dangerous when taken in conjunction with antidepressants.

As with any herbal; Yohimbe can have great physical and mental benefits when taken with caution and under professional supervision. Every person is unique. Lifestyle, chemical make-up, environment, and a myriad of factors all contribute to your personal response to any substance. Always consult a trusted authority and do your own research when investigating a new herb for medicinal use. While much more research is needed, yohimbe has great potential as both a complementary and a stand alone herb
