Antacid Herbs

Antacid herbs are used to neutralize acids in the stomach and intestinal tract. These acids can cause symptoms that are commonly known as Acid indigestion, Acid reflux, Heartburn, Sour stomach, and Upset stomach due to hyperacidity. Occasional acid indigestion can be successfully remedied with antacid herbs but, frequent occurrences of heartburn may be a symptom of a more serious condition.

What is heartburn? After eating, food is passed into the stomach. Once the food has passed, a valve (Lower Esophageal Sphincter) closes to prevent stomach acid and bile salts from entering back up the esophagus, which does not have the same protective lining found in the stomach. If the valve relaxes abnormally, malfunctions, or becomes weakened, stomach acid can back up, or reflux, into the esophagus, causing the symptoms of heartburn.

For proper digestion, you need to relax your stomach and lower stomach acids, before using any natural remedies; you should check with your physician that it is safe for you to do so. Herbs used to neutralize acids (Antacid herbs) work to reduce inflammation of the esophagus, protect and soothe the mucous membranes of the stomach, reduce excess acidity, ease nausea and promote healthy tone and peristalsis of the entire digestive tract.

Heartburn that occurs frequently may be considered Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease (commonly known as GERD), and can eventually lead to more serious health problems. Many antacid treatments are only temporary solutions that do not address the true underlying imbalances that lead to acid reflux or GERD; mainly being Liver Qi Stagnation. Unless herbs that sooth the Liver's energetic system are used, those suffering with chronic acid reflux are unlikely to experience prolonged relief.
