Curry Powder Recipe

Curry powder is a classic mixture of spices that is used in Indian cuisine.

In the Western world Curry Powder mixtures tend to have a standardized flavor, in its country of origin, there are many different curry flavors available.

Most recipes and producers of curry powder include coriander, turmeric, cumin, and fenugreek in their blends but, depending on the recipe, additional ingredients such as ginger, garlic, fennel seed, cinnamon, and clove are added. Curry powder varies according to taste and many commercial producers add lesser amounts of non-traditional ingredients like, mustard seed, green cardamom, black cardamom, mace, nutmeg, red pepper, long pepper, and black pepper to their preparations.

Curry Powder

Yield: Makes about 3/4 cup
Prep Time: 3 minutes
Total Cook Time: 3 minutes


  • 5 Tbsp coriander seeds, ground
  • 2 Tbsp cumin seeds, ground
  • 1 Tbsp turmeric, ground
  • 2 tsp ginger, ground
  • 2 tsp mustard, dry
  • 2 tsp fenugreek seeds, ground
  • 1½ tsp black pepper, ground
  • 1 tsp cinnamon, ground
  • ½ tsp cloves, ground
  • ½ tsp cardamom, ground
  • ½ tsp chile peppers, ground

Combine all ingredients and grind in a food processor or mortar and pestle until well blended.

(Store in an air tight container for up to 6 months.)
